How To Get Filthy Shower Screens Clean

Posted on: 23 April 2015

Glass shower screens give your bathroom an open, modern appearance and make morning showers brighter. They're also safer than curtains and keep floors drier. Unfortunately, they can be a nuisance to keep looking pristine, especially if you're dealing with a screen that hasn't been cleaned in some time. Keeping your shower screen clean involves regular care—and if you're cleaning a shower screen with extensive buildup, it may be time to bring out the big guns.

An ounce of prevention

The easiest way to keep shower screens sparkling is to clean them regularly. After every shower, wipe down the glass using a squeegee to remove any excess water. Spray the glass with a mixture of vinegar and water to help it keep its shine, then polish it with a clean, dry cloth.

Tackling tough buildup

If you have to clean a shower screen that's built up a lot of grime over months or years, you'll need to use a more powerful tool. Spray your shower with a shower cleaner or limescale remover, then go at the deposit with a scourer or scrubbing pad. Be sure to leave bathroom windows or doors open—the fumes from these products can be unpleasant. Once you've done this, rinse the screen with cold water, squeegee it and polish it.

Another popular cleaner for shower screens is baking soda. Apply baking soda to a cloth and wipe it all over the screen before rinsing it with warm water and drying it.

Scrubbing the seals

One of the biggest challenges when it comes to cleaning shower screens is dealing with the seals at the edges of the screens. Over time, these can become discoloured with exposure to water and soap, requiring careful attention. You'll need to go over these with a small brush—an old toothbrush works well. Use a cleaning paste such as a mixture of laundry detergent and water to scrub rubber seals.

If your screens have metal fittings, you can keep these rust-free by scrubbing them with a mixture of lemon juice and salt. Use your brush to apply this paste to rusty areas; rust is most likely to develop along edges and corners. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing it off, then dry the area with a clean cloth.

Cleaning shower screens can take a lot of work, but even simple cleaners can make a big difference. If you want to avoid the hard work, though, a quick squeegee every day can prevent most of the unwanted buildup. For more information, contact a company like Glass Projects Pty Ltd.

Glass: Function, Form, Beauty and Design

Hi, my name is Shawn. When I was ten, I loved making mosaics, and as my dad worked with stained glass, we always had lots of small pieces of coloured glass around the house to use for my mosaics. When I was at uni, I took my glass passion a different direction and began blowing glass pipes. Eventually, I got older and begin thinking about glass from a functional standpoint as well as an artistic standpoint. I am one of the rare type of people who is just as interested in buying energy efficient double-pane windows as I am making glass vases, pipes or mosaics. If you want to read about glass or anything related to it, this is the blog for you. I hope you like my posts!
